Several of our past JDP seniors are members of the Eagles swim team as well and these teens all share a similar passion to strive for excellence. Mackenzie has been touring colleges, checking out their swim teams. She’s heard, “you’ll swim less here at our college than you do for the Eagles!” Perfect preparation if she swims competitively in college!

To say the workout schedule for the Eagles is intense is an understatement. Mackenzie swims everyday but Saturday. On Wednesday and Friday she swims doubles, 5 a.m.-6:30 a.m. and 3:30-6:30!

Mackenzie’s favorite event is the 100 breaststroke, but she also competes in the 200 breaststroke, and the 50 and 100 sprint backstroke.

For most people, this intense workout schedule would feel unbearable. However, Mackenzie loves the discipline she’s seen it grow in her. She recognizes that she is pushed daily and is energized by that. She feels pumped after completing really challenging practices and is fully aware of what’s being grown in her in a way that is rare in a teenager.

The camradie that Mackenzie’s built with her teammates over the years has been a priceless bonus and contribution to her love of swimming and competing. Her old team met for dinner after meets, helping to foster a family like environment within the team. Currently, her team schedules mental health days recognizing the importance of mental checks on elite athletes. Sometimes it’s a motivational speaker, sometimes a fun bonding event, regardless, they help to rejuvenate her.

Mackenzie’s following in her mom’s footsteps with plans to pursue a bio-medical career track after graduation. Her mom runs a forensic crime lab for the police department.

While Mackenzie doesn’t have plans to work the crime scene end, she does have plans to help athletes with their fitness and healing goals. Mackenzie’s mom also has a side business, Catalyst Performance Lab, training elite athletes with fitness/health/nutrition plans. Sounds like a perfect match! So it was a sweet addition for Mackenzie to include some of her mom’s items from her own lab.

Mackenzie pretty much lives in the water, so of course we were going to lock down her competitive swimmer side. However, my goal is always to show clients sides of themselves they may have never seen, often in more fine art style portraits.

Sometimes, while creating these fine art segments, I am overwhelmed by the painterly feel of what we are creating. Before I ever even start painting I see the direction I am going and Mackenzie already felt like a painting to me as we worked together.
