Princess Heather

Heather found my portrait work via our Instagram which is devoted to our JDP seniors.  She was intrigued because the portraits revealed people and the emotions that lie beneath the surface.  They compelled her.  She said my portraits engaged her on multiple levels as story tellers.

Heather sought me out to create Unveil your Cinderella portraits for her in a compelling way, to represent the story of her last year and a half, that maybe you just might be able to relate to as well.

Heather is married to a man she adores and they have 3 children.  Her husband was to finish out his military career with a deployment for 1 1/2 years in Japan.  They debated mightily whether to uproot the family around the world or have Heather stay back to hold down the fort for his last leg till retirement.

Like so many military families, they came to the decision to have Heather stay back so the kids could stay connected into the lives full of activities and friends they had built.  Then COVID-19 hit. Heather found herself alone, far more than she had ever bargained for.  Alone and managing a life with her beloved children that left her feeling isolated in a darkness that many women can relate to during these crazy times.

We talked for quite some time during her pre-consult planning meeting as she shared her story.  She told me she was giving me artistic license to create for her in ways that gave expression to these emotions in ways that she could see her own story and others might as well.  She wanted to see the struggle and the darkness, but then also the triumph.  When I met with Heather she was just a few months shy of her husband’s deployment being over.  And since he has safely and triumphantly returned home to his very eager family.

When I showed Heather the portrait below on the back of my camera, she said, ‘this one represents where my year ended.  I’ve made it out on the other side and I’ve held my little nest together with my 3 babies in it.’  She started to tear up and I thought what an honor to tell a story and lock it down for her and her husband to always look back to celebrate their faithfulness and perseverance!

So here’s to every woman out there, just trying to hold it together and keep her little (or big) family afloat in these uncertain and unprecedented times.  Here’s to holding on to vows that knit you together in a way that weathers life’s storms.  Here’s to our military families who sacrifice more than most of us will ever know.  Thank you.
