JDP senior Katherine

Good teachers change the world, that’s abundantly obvious to anyone who’s ever had one.  JDP senior Katherine had a great science teacher in 5th grade who inspired her to go above and beyond the project requirements in a moon phase project.  She was intrigued and she was hooked and wanted to know everything she could about space.  Then the following year she had a sweet and encouraging science teacher who further cemented her love of science for her.  She knew then she wanted to be an astrophysicist/nuclear physicist and has never looked back.  And the world of science is about to get one incredible young woman entering it on the collegiate level.

Katherine’s used to seeing herself as the scientist, but not as much as a classically beautiful work of art.  That’s what makes my heart beat faster in life.  Showing young women their beautiful in ways they never imagined about themselves.

I was intrigued by this senior from our first meeting.  She’s vested in life as a scientist, a physicist, a reader, a volleyball player, a dancer and an artist.  Likely this has something to do with her not being on social media.  There’s mental bandwidth/space in her life to create and explore, which I always say is infinitely more satisfying than passively watching other people do those things.

I don’t know anything about our solar system, physics or the science fiction/high fantasy books and movies Katherine loves, but seeing her excitement over all of them was inspiring for me in portrait creation for her.  Katherine’s mind is constantly at work, trying to figure out math and physics problems/equations, deciding on a new abstract piece of art to create, how to improve her volleyball serve…the list could go on for days.

Katherine is obsessed with all things science fiction and especially the Star Wars series.  She was in luck as I have recently begun incorporating light painting into my portrait sessions.  I let her know we had a lightsaber for her and her eyes were wide with joy.  She wielded that thing like a pro and now we have what looks like her starring in the next Star Wars movie below!

I’m pretty sure this is going to make her little brothers, who she sword fights with regularly, a little jealous.

Katherine’s vested at her school as well.  At Winters Mill she’s in the Key club, NHS, reading club and on her class board.  She hopes to start a physics club as well.

For the reader in her that can’t get enough of the books that inspire her…

After a probability unit in 8th grade, Katherine bought this die, after talking with her teacher about it.  It is the largest possible die with 120 sides.  This led to a conversation with my math loving son and texts flying back and forth re why 120 sides is the limit for a die.  I loved watching their wheels spin on this.

Katherine’s artistic side expresses itself in painting, mostly abstract pieces.  She painted space scenes on her ballet shoes and creates personalized painted gifts for her friends.  I love her Starry Night recreation below.

Katherine, your future looks sooo bright!  I see you in the future with a nobel peace prize in something way beyond my ability to wrap my brain around.  Continue to explore, create, intrigue and vest deeply in life–your impact will be great and our world a better place for your amazing mind and your gracious spirit!
