JDP senior Lily

This girl…JDP senior Lily with a smile (complete with dimples) that could launch 1000 ships! You’d never know this incredible young woman hates to have her picture taken. I didn’t fully realize how much until after her session. But, victory on my end because she ended by saying, “I’d do that again!” which her mom was bowled over by.

It’s one of my favorite things about creating portraits for our JDP seniors–showing these focused athletes themselves in ways they never imagined. Lily’s brother JDP senior Christian was here about 6 years ago. Ever since then, Lily has been dreaming about her own athletic portraits. Everyone who knows Lily, knows she’s fanatical about her sports. She wasn’t sure about creating in dresses, till she started trying on some in studio that got her nod of approval.

Lily loved how we highlighted Christian’s strength and love of competition and hoped for the same for herself. When she’s not cheering on her favorite football and basketball teams, she’s in serious training as a competitive swimmer.

As we vision cast idea for her, I shared portraits from the recent swimmer JDP senior Taj. Lily said, “I know Taj! I swim with him! He’s really good!” Always a small world!

Lily has been swimming since she was 7 for the McDaniel swim club, the Westminster Stingrays. She started competing with free style and evolved into butterfly. Today her main events are the 100 and 200 butterfly. Her 100 time is 57.89 and her 200 time is 2:07.

I asked Lily to bring the awards she’s earned from the last 10 years of swimming. Little did I realize this would be more than a big bin worth. There were piles of trophies, plaques, ribbons, medals–she had it all! We paid homage to just a small fraction of her winnings above with her medals and look closely at the bottom of the frame to see just some of her trophies peeking in.

Below is one of those quiet moments that swimmer revel in. The thousands of hours poured into developing their skill…and these moments often resonate deeply. Lily loves how swimming is an escape and life just fades away when she takes to the water. Her closest friendships have developed via swimming as well. Traveling with her teammates has created memories for Lily she will always cherish.

Lily hopes to swim at her dream school–Duke University. If that doesn’t work out, likely she’ll swim at a lower D1 school or possibly D2. She currently swims for the Eagle’s at McDonough. What’s entailed for a practice schedule to be a D1 swimmer? She lives in Taneytown and travels to McDonough everyday to train with her team.

Yes, you read that correctly! She travels to Baltimore 2 days a week for a 5 a.m.-6:30 a.m. swim practice! Then makes it back to Carroll County in time for her high school classes to start. She also has afternoon practices 3:45-6:45. During the summer her morning practices are 5:45-8:30 and then she’s back at it for an afternoon practice 3:45-5:30.

When Lily’s not in the water or watching sports, you’ll likely find her enjoying the outdoors.

Lily was just so stinkin adorable in her editorial segment!

Perhaps my favorite time of all are our fine art segments for my JDP seniors! For Lily I knew it made most sense to create these in the water for her. Showing competitive athletes their fine art self–few things make me happier in life!

I’ll never be able to adequately explain it, but his portrait below stopped me in my tracks…

Lily you were an absolute delight! Thank you for trusting me to show you sooo many cool sides to yourself! I can’t wait to hear what your next steps are with swimming and am praying your shoulder heals up and you are back to full speed in the blink of an eye!
