Mitty entered a competition to design her school’s yearbook cover in 8th grade and won. The year before she entered she began thinking about making art her career path. By 10th grade she started to get serious about making that happen.

Mitty’s talent is recognized by the art community and has resulted in her accumulating 160k in scholarships for continuing her art education. She has also received the DaVinci award. That grand total of scholarship money came from a variety of sources: 46k from portfolio reviews, 75k from portfolio and grades, 28k from philanthropic grants to encourage artists, and 12k in grants.

Mitty sits for weekly critiques of her work to shape her as an artist. Most importantly the critiques stop bad art habits from forming. I was curious what some examples of bad art habits. Mitty explained she’s been trained to receive criticism which is a skill that eludes most people naturally. She understands the growth that’s come from this weekly critique in her own work and is appreciative of how it has shaped her into a better creator.

Another bad art habit would be giving into negativity about a piece of art and bailing on it. Instead, Mitty’s been encouraged to take time to understand why it’s causing her problems and consider alternative approaches.

Mitty’s favorite thing to draw is sci-fi scenes filled with concepts. She hopes to make her career as a comic book artist, creating the stories of women and their personal growth. She’s grown tremendously the last few years as an artist and is proud of her ability to take more risks in her creating then she ever has before.

Mitty’s family appreciates her eyes wide open creative approach to life. They love her for the unique take she presents on life. Her mom loves seeing how she embraces life and holds loosely to things so she can create. Her father was a performance street painter/spray paint artist in sunny FL so it appears he passed on this love of painting to his girl. Her step father introduced her to video games which has played an influential role in her creating as well.

Mitty remembers seeing Claude Monet’s famous painting, “Girl with the Parosel” in person and she was shook. The moment was so surreal to her and she cried. I recalled a similar time for myself seeing Mary Cassat’s “Child in a Straw Hat”. Mitty was hopeful we could create something of her to pay homage to Monet’s piece. And that we did!:)

Mitty is full of movement and that came out all day as we created. It’s almost as though there’s a musical soundtrack playing in that creator’s mind of hers that flows out of her with grand joy. What a delight to capture this in her portrait.
