JDP senior Zach

You know how it is when your friends haven’t seen your child in a long time, and they say, “what!!!??? Zach’s a senior already?!? No way!!!” Well, it’s pretty hilarious when my own sons say it about one of our JDP seniors.

Zach loved the idea of including his crazy golden retriever Jax in his portrait time. Jax is 2 and has stolen Zach’s heart, despite their first meeting involving Jax puking on Zach 13 times on the car ride home! “It’s soupy” is now an often quoted family tag line!

Zach’s sporting a shirt from the small business his dad started, JB Firearm and Defense Training. Just a business Jeff started, along with his full time job as a chemist and his refereeing job! The Barnes family goes big or goes home!

JDP senior Zach and his brother former JDP senior Adam grew up with my boys. Many years ago we also created their family portraits. My boys actually all helped to do Zach’s before school care in our home. They ate breakfast together and entertained each other with stories of their most recent adventures, always complete with sound effects. So little Zach, being all grown up, was quite shocking to all my college aged sons.

Zach attends Winters Mill High where he’s attending Career Tech with a focus on Cybersecurity. Zach’s always been the kid to take things apart to see how they worked and then put them back together again. He figured he’d be an engineer until he hit a roadblock with math during the pandemic homeschool experience. Zach realized what he most loved was solving technical problems. He currently interns for the Board of Ed helping classroom teachers with their IT issues and updates around the county.

Zach also recently received his Eagle Scout. His troop is serious about their projects to earn this prestigious rank. He restored the Carroll County Farm Museum fire house building. It had a horse drawn hose reel from back in the day. He restored the whole thing!

Zach fund raised to earn the money for his supplies for the renovation project. He was set to start when a fire happened at the maintenance building where all his supplies were stored at the farm museum! He had to fund raise again to fund his project!

Boy Scouts helped to equip Zach with the skills do see a project through from A-Z like this, including set backs which inevitably seem to be a part of most things in life. Zack credits the leadership and ability to handle challenging situations like this to his Boy Scout training. His dad has always been one of his troop leaders who has helped to lead this charge for him and his fellow scouts.

Solving the rubik cube in one of the skills Zach brought with him from the stay at home pandemic years.

Zach filled me in on a memorable Boy Scout trip to Philmont where it rained 11 of the 12 days they were there. They slogged in desert sludge day after day while the area received 9″ of the 18″ of rain they’d receive that year, all in one week! He noted it was not fun while there, but it’s a cool memory to look back on.

Zach’s homage to his future in studying and working in Cybersecurity. He’ll be attending Bloomsburg University this fall to major in Digital Forensics in Cybersecurity.

Zach borrowed his mom’s laptop for the portrait below…which happens to have as the screensaver one of his brother Adam’s JDP senior portraits! Zach also left his mom the surprise of hiding all her icons from her home screen. If there’s one thing everyone knows about Zach, it’s that this kid will make you laugh and has a lot of tricks up his sleeve to keep the troops entertained! Mom’s cherishing Zach’s antics knowing he’s about to launch from the nest. She’s also grateful for the growing closeness between them that’s resulted from college hunting together.

Zach’s been playing soccer since he was 5 years old and loved everything about the game. He’s just as happy playing the game, watching the game or reffing the game. Zach is a versatile defensive player you’ll most often find him in the role of CDM-center defensive midfield. He joined his dad at just 13 when he started refereeing to earn money.

Zach’s made countless memories with his team mates over the years, whether on the fields around the county, the high school fields or his tournament weekends. One tourney weekend in particular he got to buy a stuffed penguin at a Cracker Barrel at a team meal which he affectionately named George. George has made himself quite at home in the Barnes household.

Zach’s years on the fields have certainly left a mark on him…but not all those marks have been good ones. He has had 5 concussions and 2 necks dislocations from laying it all out there to make the plays happen! He is a daredevil and always has been. He’s the kid growing up who climbed up the banister on the outside, walked across the top crossbeam on his play set and dove head first into every adventure before him with a mischievous grin!
