We love the vision casting meeting that happens prior to our JDP sessions. I get to know clients and we share a bit of life to pave the path for the awesomeness we will lock down. It’s important to find out what will make their hearts beat faster when they see it in portraits. We all leave those meetings so excited and anticipating the creating day!

And that’s how it was with sweet Marlon and Kelly last winter. They were going to come for a winter maternity session to celebrate the pending arrival of their little girl Sophia. Kelly radiated with so much joy as she tried on outfits in studio and we collaborated to plan her dream session. Marlon beamed with pride as his girl spun in her dresses for him to admire!

But, alas…best laid plans! It was just a few weeks later and Kelly was in the hospital with serious concerns about her baby girl being born way to early. She entered the hospital at week 31 of the pregnancy and it didn’t take long before the doctors told her she’d be staying for the duration of her pregnancy. They were hopeful Kelly could make it to week 34.

(Every family session starts with a love story between two people who commit to each other through all of life’s ups and downs. I always encourage a recording of that love story before my lens.)

Well baby Sophia made it to week 33 weighing in at a whopping 3 lbs. 9 oz and miraculously she was breathing on her own!! What a blessing!!
Seeing the story in people’s lives is a gift I’m very grateful for when creating portraits. Watching the tenderness and hands on fathering Marlon used as he helped to dress Sofia…this is a rarity in fathering that will be an incredible blessing throughout Kelly and Sophia’s life!

This little girl will always know how deeply she is loved by a mama and daddy who deeply love one another. If every child could grow up in that kind of mantle of love….
Below will go down as a chuckle in perpetuity for both Marlon and Kelly. Kelly had this one in her potential favorite picks grouping and Marlon said, ‘well, I get a vibe like I’m a preacher who just baptized Sophia and brought her up out of the water!’ Just about 15 years of JDP, 100000’s of portraits in and that was a first!
One of the absolute joys for me in planning and creating for Marlon and Kelly was their desire to see the story in their recordings. When Kelly saw the series below, she said, “this is our story”.
Kelly noted how these 3 portraits were a reflection of their journey. First, she carried Sophia for 7 months. Second, she and Marlon walked through the rough time in the hospital leading up to her birth and then the NICU. Last, on the other side of the storm, it’s them as a family walking into their future.

So often it’s moms who record family life of their children. But there’s often little of seeing how their children respond to them. Sophia just erupted into joy over and over again in response to her mama and daddy.
Kelly saw our JDP portrait displays at the Town Mall of Westminster a few years ago and told Marlon, ‘if we ever get portraits created, I want for us to have this photographer do it!’ Well, fast forward a few years and here we are!:)
Marlon and Kelly are collectors and that’s what took them to Town Mall that day. Looks like they are passing on their love of Pokeman to Sophia already!

Marlon and Kelly I wish you all the best as you raise your sweet girl into a woman of impact who loves as big at the two of you do throughout her life!
