Meet the founder and president of Standard Petroleum Logistics, Misty Sexton. When you think of an oil business, typically, it’s not a woman owned business that jumps to mind. Misty has been breaking through those stereotypes ever since she began working in the oil business. She’s been surrounded by men from the start and has managed to thrive in this world with her own personal brand of leadership.

Misty’s experience within the petroleum industry includes business development, supply procurement, government contracting, logistics, project management, taxation and even dispatching! Her focus within each arena has always been service which is what led her to make the leap to start SPL. In an era of large corporations, expertise and attention to detail are fading away. That’s a dangerous thing when you’re dealing with heavily-regulated, hazardous materials.
Despite the fact that Misty started the company and has been in this field for 18 years, she’s still almost always assumed to be someone’s wife or secretary when she’s introduced. That misconception does not last long. She’s loved by her clients for her attention to detail and A+ customer service they have come to rely on.

Misty has written and edited for industry publications, lobbied lawmakers and served as a consultant on all things fuel; from emergency preparedness, bid analysis, fuel marketing and general fuel management education.
A native of rural Virginia, Misty Sexton studied biology at Radford University and went on to earn her Master’s in Business from The College of William & Mary. Though she will be the first to tell you her greatest education came from time in the passenger seat, pulling hoses, and getting her hands dirty.

I initially met Misty a few years ago when we created personal branding portraits for her. Given the dynamic way she leads life, she wanted a punch to her photos that would reveal the many facets of her as a business owner, a writer, a traveler, an accomplished vocalist and a roller skating cart wheeling phenom who’s ready to face head on every challenge in life and come out the victor!
