JDP senior Abby

JDP senior Abby started playing softball at 4 years old and has just never stopped.  Competition runs fiercely through her blood and she’s a tough competitor to face at bat.  She started pitching at 10 and it’s her favorite contribution she makes to her travel Maryland Fever team.  She loves it partially because she plays an instrumental role in the whole game that she loves so much.  No down time for this one!

Abby plays the outfield as well.  Her transition to Maryland Fever happened last year.  There have been so many changes in youth sports throughout the pandemic.  She met all the players last year, but the bonds have formed quickly and tightly for which she’s grateful.

Abby went to Nashville for Nationals this year and every game she played was hard fought.  In the end they missed the championship by 1 run.

Abby somehow fits in a hostess job at Sykesville station when she’s not practicing on the fields or the batting cages.

Abby athletic accomplishments started in elementary school when she was in the junior olympics 3 years in a row, 3rd-5th grade.  She was a competitive jump roper.  She competed in freestyle routine and performer.  She held the double under record of 135 in a minute in 5th grade!

Abby is an amazing example of adversity at the start of life NOT getting in the way of accomplishing incredible things.  Abby was born at 26 weeks, along with her twin sister.  Her mom’s water broke at the much to early time of 23 weeks.  Abby was born weighing just 1 lb. 15 oz.   Sadly, her twin sister blessed her parents and Abby with her presence for just 6 days before she passed away.

Abby spent 75 days in the NICU, under the watchful gaze of a very worried and anxious momma and daddy.  When Abby was finally able to transition home, all the fears of new moms are only multiplied exponentially after having  lost one child and experienced the pressure cooker of the NICU.   More encouragement for moms of premies, Abby at 6 months still wouldn’t lift her head up, and yet look at her today!

I asked Abby how this part of her story has influenced her as a young woman.  She said, “I cry every year on my birthday.”  She also fell in love with the portrait above.  I commented how angelic Abby looked and mom noticed that Abby saw a connection to her twin sister in this…cue the tissues…

We ventured out to the fields for a bit to see Abby in action and I for one would not like to face her as a pitcher!

I love that this tough as nails player looked so graceful and gorgeous on the fields that are her home away from home!  Abby will be continuing to play softball in college as she has just committed to Lebanon Valley where’s she’ll proudly be a Dutchman.  We wish you all the best and know you’ll be bringing your A game to every field you step on!
