JDP senior Sela

The range of emotions that well up inside a mama when it’s time for her sweet girl to fly the next for college is certainly wide. JDP senior Sela is one of our last class of 2024’s to lock down before graduation! (still a few more). Her mom Rhonda is brimming with a delicate mixture of pride and sorrow. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” is great advice in theory, but reality can be much harder to navigate changes that will bring distance.

Watching Rhonda take in Sela’s session from the sidelines was precious. On more than one occasion tears, aka healing waters of the soul, graced her cheeks. “I’ll always take your dirty socks,” she regularly tells Sela as a shared joke between them. What a treasure for a child to grow up under the mantle of such love.

We see it often, this excitement for the next steps right around the corner battling the longing to hold onto the amazing young woman you’ve helped to grow for the last 18 years! What a delicate balancing act it is for so many mothers!

JDP senior Sela is about to graduate from Bryn Mawr where she excels in all the computer science offerings available. STEM is her love! So much so, she reinvigorated the ‘Mawrtians Who Code’ club and leads it with pride. Just about 10% of the school’s population is in the club now! One excited person is all it takes for that to become contagious! She’s recently received the Department of computer science award for highest performing senior!

Sela adores the puzzle of coding and cracking the mysteries that lie behind programs that keep all our lives running. She’s wrapping up an internship at NASA where she’s been working on data processing for Amazon web services. She’s processing data from a newer satellites that’s doing the real work.

Sela’s dream job is to be a software engineer and she is certainly well on her way! She hopes to focus on data structure computer science. Machine learning and robotics is what has been intriguing her with her studies at Bryn Mawr. AI is on everyone’s minds lately and this young woman will be shaping that future for us.

I love the diversity of my client base–this tech girl just rocked her runway segment!! Blowing away all those stereotypes about what a tech student looks like!

As her college acceptance letters rolled in, Sela was excited to receive her acceptance to University of Maryland’s honors cyber security program. However, she really loves Boston and was hoping to attend college up north. Then she hit the jackpot when she received her acceptance letter to the much coveted Tufts University’s computer science school of engineering. To even be considered for acceptance, a GPA of over 4.0 is necessary!

Sela is soo thrilled to be joining Tuft’s and Boston life in just a few short months! Her and her mom already have the bus/plane route planned out for trips home to visit!

This girl who loves all things tech is pretty equally committed to her love of fashion, especially when it comes to her sunglasses, hats and earrings! She even made her own ear rings out of old circuit boards which of course we had to include in her portraits! (she’s wearing them above)

It’s no surprise that everyone on set from our days of shooting is exhausted when we are done! I had Sela balancing a pose in her editorial segment that was a challenge in her Doc Martens. As she tipped we realized we had just created the perfect Zara model piece! (if you aren’t familiar google “Zara models” and you’ll see what fascinated us! Not a lot of people can look so adorable when they tip over like this!

I talked with Sela a bit about the ramifications of AI continuing to evolve. Few of us know what that’s going to look like, but we are certainly in for a wild ride! It’s good to know women of such character and brilliance like Sela will be helping to lead the way with integrity!
